Playing Chicken
A hen and a rooster face each other across a warm ochre ground with the title handwritten into the surface above them and a scatter of small birds flying off the top edge. Eighteen inches square. Schreivogl writes into her paintings the way she writes in a sketchbook — the words are part of the picture plane, not a caption on it.
